What Sentry Misses: Silent UX Bugs That Never Throw Errors

Sentry is one of the most important tools in a modern engineering stack. It catches uncaught exceptions, tracks error rates, and alerts teams when something breaks at the code level. If your production app throws an error, Sentry will find it.
But Sentry has a fundamental blind spot: it only sees errors that the code explicitly throws.

Seven Categories of Bugs Sentry Cannot See
1. Broken Redirect Loops
A user logs in and gets redirected to the dashboard. The dashboard checks authentication, finds an edge case (e.g., expired session token that still passes validation), and redirects back to login. The user bounces between two pages. No exception is thrown. The HTTP status codes are all 200 or 302. Sentry sees nothing. The user sees a spinning browser and gives up.
2. Silent API Mismatches
An API endpoint returns a 200 OK response with a body that contains an error message inside the data payload: {"success": true, "data": {"error": "insufficient_credits"}}. The frontend checks response.ok, sees it is true, and shows a success toast. The user thinks their action worked. It did not. No exception. No Sentry event.
3. Unresponsive UI Elements
A CSS change causes a transparent overlay to sit on top of a button. The button is visible but not clickable. Users see it, try to click it, and nothing happens. They rage-click. They give up. The DOM is intact. The button's click handler is correctly attached. It is just not receiving events because another element is intercepting them. No error is thrown.
4. Wrong Data Displays
A dashboard shows yesterday's metrics because a cache key was not invalidated after a deploy. The page loads successfully. The API returns data. The charts render. But the data is 24 hours stale. Users making business decisions based on this data are working with wrong information. No exception. No alert.
5. Copy and Content Regressions
A deploy overwrites a CTA button label from "Start Free Trial" to "undefined". A pricing page shows "$NaN/month". An i18n fallback displays raw template keys. These are visible to users but invisible to error monitoring because the rendering pipeline completed without errors — it just rendered the wrong strings.
6. Form Submission Data Loss
A multi-step form saves progress on each step. A race condition causes step 3 data to be overwritten by step 2 data when the user navigates quickly. The form submits. The API returns success. But the saved data is missing fields. No exception. The user discovers the problem days later when they try to use the data.
7. Broken Third-Party Integrations
A payment provider's embedded checkout widget fails to load because of a Content Security Policy change in your last deploy. The checkout page renders, but the payment form is empty. The user sees a blank space where the credit card form should be. Your error boundary catches the widget failure gracefully and shows nothing. Sentry records no event because the error was handled.
Why This Matters More at Startup Scale
Enterprise teams can absorb silent bugs because they have dedicated QA, manual testing cycles, and large enough user bases that patterns surface through support volume alone.
Seed-to-Series B teams cannot. Every churned user matters. Every broken checkout costs real revenue. Every onboarding failure delays the path to product-market fit.
At this stage, teams typically:
